Laser hair removal in Ibiza: what to know

Cove with turquoise water in Ibiza

What laser hair removal is

Laser hair removal is a medical aesthetic treatment that aims to reduce body and facial hair gradually. The laser light targets the pigment in the hair and delivers heat to the follicle, the structure in the skin from which each hair grows. That heat reduces the follicle’s ability to produce new hair.

Because it involves a laser, it should be carried out by a team with medical training. At Clínica Ibiza Posidonia, the medical team first assesses your skin and hair and tells you whether laser hair removal is suitable for you. Everyone responds differently, so the same results cannot be promised to everyone.

Who it may suit

Many people look into laser hair removal because they want to shave or wax less often, or because traditional hair removal leaves them with irritation or ingrown hairs. It can be considered for different areas of the body and face, in both women and men.

Skin colour and hair colour both affect how each person responds. Very fair, grey or red hair has little pigment and tends to respond only to a limited extent. There are also situations in which it is better to wait, such as pregnancy, some skin conditions or certain medicines that increase sensitivity to light. That is why the medical team will tell you whether it is right for you.

How the treatment is planned

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser works mainly during the active growth phase. As not every hair is in that phase at the same time, the treatment is planned as several sessions spaced out over time. The number of sessions and the interval between them depend on the area, your hair type and your skin.

During a session you will usually feel warmth or small pricks, which each person experiences differently. Some temporary redness may appear in the treated area afterwards. Possible effects and aftercare depend on each case; the medical team will explain them during your consultation.

Ibiza’s sun and laser hair removal

On an island with so many hours of sunshine, sun exposure really matters. Tanned skin contains more pigment, which can increase the risk of irritation or marks after laser treatment. That is why sun protection is usually recommended throughout the treatment.

Many people prefer to start in autumn or winter, when sun exposure is lower, although there is no single rule. What matters is planning it with the medical team, who will give you specific advice on sun protection and aftercare based on your skin and the time of year.

Before you start

Before your sessions, you will usually be asked not to pull hair out with wax or tweezers for a while, as the laser needs the hair to remain in the follicle. Shaving, on the other hand, is generally allowed and is often requested before a session. This advice may vary from case to case.

It is also worth telling the medical team if you take any medication, have had skin reactions or tend to develop pigmentation. With that information, the medical team adjusts its advice and tells you whether the treatment is suitable for you.
